NORTH MELBOURNE: Griot Shango Film Club: Our Warrior Screening

  • Institute for Post-Colonial Studies (IPCS) 78 Little Curzon Street North Melbourne, VIC, 3051 Australia (map)

Join us on Thursday 21st of August at 6:30pm for the first screening of IPCS' Griot Shango Film Club, Our Warrior: The story of Robbie Thorpe, followed by a talk.

This event takes place on the unceded sovereign land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. Sovereignty was never ceded.

About Our Warrior:

Krauatungalung (Gurnai) and Djapwurrung (Gunditjmara) political activist Robbie Thorpe stands as part of a long line of Indigenous resistance to invasion. Our Warrior (dir. Anthony Kelly) shows the making of this modern leader and tracks the resurgence of a powerful Black, Indigenous, anti-colonial movement that is currently reshaping the country.

The documentary looks back at Robbie’s early life, his family and explores the emergence of his radical politics in the formative years of Black Power in 'Australia', his apprenticeship in the 1970's under Dr Bruce McGuiness, and his emergence as one of the most controversial and uncompromising activists in 'Australia' today. In doing so, the film uncovers the story of how resistance and resilience are transmitted across generations.

Accessibility:

Please note that our building is not wheelchair accessible. There are two steps to the room where the screening will be held via the courtyard, and several steps via internal building access.

Masks and hand sanitizer will be available. Please do not attend if you have tested positive for Covid-19.

About Griot Shango Film Club

An IPCS film club screening works, both contemporary and archival, from across the Black diaspora. Whilst the camera’s encounter with Blackness is so often associated with colonial ethnography, Griot Shango Film Club asks the question of what it looks and sounds like when this technology is turned in service of resistance, decolonial struggle and construction of Black visual languages and landscapes.

Tickets $0-$30 available HERE!
